Default Steering Box (Power)

I need to replace the power steering box on my XJ.

Does a steering box from a 1996 model fit a 2000?

There is a write-up on Jeepin about using a Durango box b/c it is beefier and has the same mounting holes and spacing too.
http://www.jeepin.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21773.
Researched that for ya!

I thought it was a Durango box. Either way it is a beefier steering box. Blue is right the thread on NAXJA is very detailed and make the swap out easy

My computer isn't showing the pictures anymore but it is a good write up either way.

I will keep searching but this is a very good mod for your cherokee.

Good catch Stryker. I found it on Jeepin too and it seems a little more detailed as well. I corrected (edited) the source and vehicle too.

I did the same swap on my TJ (basically the same thing) and it was worth it! The difference between the stock and durango box was night and day. I could turn my 33's effortlessly and i had a used 83k durango box It never leaked or gave me issues in 3 years.

worthy mod

a YJ steering box is a good upgrade as well

alittle info here... http://www.gotreks.com/page.asp?pageid=58

the YJ box can be used without the tnt brace but the fourth bolt wont have a hole in the frame to use it. and yes the bolts can and do sheer off of the stock box (been there done it it sucks)

There was mixed answers on the years. I got a 99 from a v-8 durango. It has to be a v-8 though.

Not just a V8 but a 4WD V8 to get the better box. It is mentioned in the thread from Jason at Jeepin.com. Read the thread I posted above, before attempting the install.

i think i'm gonna go ahead and do this mod when i install a steering brace. My stock box is "alright" but i can tell it's starting to leak at the top. I figured i'd replace it now since i replaced EVERYTHING on my front end so far.

This is what i planned on getting but i haven't verified that it would work on the xj, although it seems to be the right box.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...002146958&rd=1

I asked the seller if he could measure the bolt pattern on it just to be sure but he can't......

I'm betting it fits though.

I just asked the seller again to verify if this was the same box from a 99 durango and he said yes. Good deal for for steering box that comes with a warranty too.

Bolt pattern is the same but the ratio and the casting strength is what is increased in the 4WD version. They are different part numbers. Check to see that at the local NAPA store before you hand over $200+ dollars to this Ebay guy.

Ok Blue, i looked into it and here's what i found over at napaonline.com:

1998 Dodge Dakota 5.2 v-8 4x4: NSP 88278131 Gear Box $190 (after core)
1998 Dodge Durango 5.2 v-8 4x4: NSP 88278131 Gear Box $190 (after core)

1999 Dodge Dakota 5.2 v-8 4x4 NSP 88278139 Gear Box $239 (after core)
1999 Dodge Durango 5.2 v-8 4x4 NSP 88278139 Gear Box $239 (after core)

So, the 98's differ from the 99's but both trucks are identical. It has to be the 5.2 v-8. Some of the 5.9's have rack n pinion.

Do you know what the difference is between the 98 and 99 box?
