Default steering box adjustment

I just adjusted my steering box. 1/4 turn on the bolt seemed to snug things up perfectly. I am able to turn the wheels lock to lock without any binding or crappy sounds.

In reasearching this there are horror stories all over the web that warn about blowing up the box. Anything I should check before I put my fan back to make sure its not too tight??

Did you drive it? Leave the fan out and drive it around. When i was adjusting mine, i noticed that the box reacted different when the vehicle was moving. I took me 5 tries to get it just right.

BE CAREFUL!! and remember your turn counts.

I did drive it and it seems fine.

How did you "get it right" What happened when it went too far, did you feel/hear it binding?

Before I messed with it, I marked the top of the allen bolt with a bright red marker so I could make sure I didnt turn it while I was turning the nut. The allen bolt has only gone 1/4 inch clockwise so far

Yes if its to tight, it will bind. If its to loose, you get lots of slop in the wheel.

Just an FYI because I don't want you to get hurt...

Adjusting the steering box is supposed to be done out of the vehicle. There are certain measurement's that need to be taken to ensure the box will not "blow up." I would consult a FSM and follow the correct procedure.

Again not saying you will get hurt or anything will happen, just that there is the correct way to do this adjustment.

I did mine in the jeep. I know this isnt preferred, but I only moved it 1/4 turn and its handling fine. No binding, grinding, or any issues

Default steering box issue

Ok. So I recently changed my steering box because of side to side play in the output shaft. I went thru 3 autozone boxes. All of them having the same issue out package. I have now put on an s10 box from advance. It's slightly better. But still has side to side play that's causing me to have a wooble. If I've read thru all of this correctly. Would resetting the bearing preload remove the play I'm getting. Or am I just a very unlucky person who keeps getting boxes with worn out sector shaft bearings.

The issue is probably not the steering box.
