Steel or alloy?

Want to get some opinions on what is better for a mostly DD wheel. So is it steel or alloy?

finneys98xj 06-04-2009 09:11 PM

If you dont do much wheeling alloy if you wheel a lot steel.

FlyingLow 06-04-2009 09:12 PM

Can't go wrong with steel:thumbsup:

dlundblad 06-04-2009 09:13 PM

I just read today that steel decreases gas mileage... And some of the stock alloys look really nice.

the truth about alloys is that most are stronger than steel wheels, and theyre much lighter. thats about it.

i just like steel because they are cheaper and i dont care if i scratch them like i do with alloy:cheers:

If you wheel on a lot of rocks or wheel hard meaning like to see how high you can get the jeep off the ground you are more likely to crack an alloy will. yes you may still Bend a steel wheel but it is a lot safe driving that home than a cracked alloy, not to mention cheaper to replace in most cases.

I personaly have only seen one break and that was on an Xploder and we want wheeling we were driving and had a blow out the wheel hit the pavement and busted a chuck out of the back of the wheel about half the size of a golf ball. I have seen broken ones that people have busted wheeling hard, but only seen one break in person.

jeep98b 06-04-2009 09:29 PM

All I wanted was opinions on this I guess I will decide for myself.

dlundblad 06-04-2009 09:32 PM

Well, the alloys will look a lot nicer IMO. I would prefer a cheaper steel rim for winter driving though. So for me, it depends on what season it is.

I didnt say if you wheeled in rocks you where definitly going to bust an alloy but you are more likely too.

so.

the tire blew out, then broke the rim... on... pavement.

relevance?

every comp rig in XRRA, WEROCK, whatever runs alloys.

FlyingLow 06-04-2009 09:34 PM

Isn't there many other factors that play a larger role like tire diameter, driving style, and tire pressure? If you have too little sidewall or tire pressure you'll mess up the rim no matter what material its made of. And you can mess up any rim if you drive hard enough. Then again it's just supposed to be opinions. I second the lock motion. :fight:

a1racer 06-04-2009 09:34 PM

do what you want i have seen some super nice beadlock alloys that i would not mind getting. but for me i am cheep and steels is the way to go plus if i want bead locks in the future i can get the weld ons for like 200 for a full set so that is not to bad. and i have a friend on alloys with beadlocks and the thing has seen more rocks and wheeling then about 90% of the people on here have seen including johnson vally sledghammer and they held up great for the abuse we put them through

macsXJ 06-04-2009 09:34 PM

I like the look of some alloy wheels, and I have beat the crap out of my steelies. Yes it is your choice.

My solution: 2 sets of wheels, cheap steelies to wheel on with re-treads, and nice alloys with some AT's for DD. Im saving the $$ for this solution.

That's seriously what I'm looking at doing right now. I just need the money for the 16in ATs

We where runnig 60 on a main highway and took a turn when the tire blow and the wheel smacked the pavement.

Not a bad idea. The best of both worlds.

that is extremely relevant to wheeling and this thread then, thank you.

huntin rig 06-04-2009 10:32 PM

Alloy all the way. They look nice and are way lighter then steel

a1racer 06-04-2009 10:48 PM

still 50 50

What? Someone can post something as fact on here...and it doesnt have to be proven?

What is there to prove? His statement? Just thinkin out loud here.

I have seen just as many steel rims bend beyond repair as i have alloy ones break.

Tabatha Will 06-04-2009 10:50 PM

Steel... It may be heavier, but I just like it better, and as mentioned before it will only bend and dent... Though alloy may be very strong it CAN crack as i have seen this happen to my friends trucks when he smacked them up against a huge rock...

okcjeeper 06-04-2009 11:20 PM

No need to lock the thread. Good tech debate is healthy and I agree one should not make claims of fact if they do not provide proof. How ever I will say some need to chill on the attitude. If you can't debate and behave like and adult you need to move along now.

CHIF8008 06-04-2009 11:23 PM

get steel(IT DONT BEND!!)

i like black steel :]
