Mechanical fan. They do not all do that though. The fan is engaged all the way. May not be working properly when the speed of fan is not relative to the rpm of engine.

If your saying engine noise why not state that in your post?
You say it sounds like a huge fan. Well there is a fan on your jeep that has a clutch and if it was to stick it would run at full RPM no matter the actual RPM. Then when the temp rises it acts correctly.

My jeep does not do what you are talking about. Only time you hear a loud fan sound from mine is if it is reved and release quickly.
Have you been in every XJ?
So fact all Xj's do not do this.
