My 1990 cherokee laredo (automatic, 4.0) cranks, starts and shuts off as soon as I release the key. I replaced the ignition and ballast resistor. Anybody got a new suggestion?

No, it'll rev if I hold the key but cuts off when I release it.

It sounds like something with wiring but I can't think of anything off the top of my head

Ever replace the fuel pump relay?

You can swap the relays around also.

Sometimes doing post 3 in my link will help, especially at the relay receptacles.

It started. I switched my a/c clutch relay with the fuel pump relay and it cranked up and stayed on. I'll keep trying it today and get a new relay.
THanks.
I'll check out post 3.

Default Crap. Crap. Crap

Day off. Went out and installed my new collant bottle, ready to go get inspection and fix a leaky tire and of course.........Stupid Jeep doesn't even give me a click when I turn the key. I tried jumping it off just in case it was the battery but.. nothing. not even a click from the starter. The gauges move when I turn on the key but nothing under the hood moves. I noticed that the interior light switch was on (my daughter sits outside on the phone) the the battery charge was low but returned to normal when I jumped it. So what should I look for now?

I just got it started by jumping the starter terminals, so its not the battery. I put a new ignition in it when I had the starting problem that turned out to be the relay. I've still got the old ignition do you think its the new one "acting up" or some other issue?

Answer the question in post 9. It's a hokey diagnostic tool.

Key off 12.60, key on 12.44 (that at the battery. I'm not much of an electrician)

You're not getting power to the starter then. If you were, the voltmeter would dip down big time. I'm off to work now.
