Default Starting problems

So my 2001 XJ sport just started not starting. When I turn the key, all the electrical everything comes on, but the engine doesn't make a noise... Then I'll try again and still nothing. Then I'll try again and she'll start right up no problem. It's very unpredictable weather or not it will start. I had new positive and negative connectors and wires put in, along with a new starter wire and a brand new battery and it still does it. My mechanic is stumped cuz it never happens when he has it. We don't want to put in a new starter cuz we don't know if that's it. My mechanic is gonna check some more wires and leads to see if that works. If you have any idea, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried to shake the shifter handle while trying to start it? I would have the Neutral Saftey switch replaced. I would also lean toward a new ignition switch especially if you have to turn the ignition 3 times before it magically starts. Either the NSS or ignition switch. Good Luck!!

As mentioned, try wiggling the shift lever while turning the key or try starting in neutral. If either of these techniques work, you have a problem with your neutral safety switch (NSS)

Here is a link to a very good article on "refurbishing" the NSS.

Ok well I know that the reverse lights do work, and I haven't gotten a chance to shake the shifter when starting cuz I haven't had any problems starting it recently.

The problem will most likely come back as unfortunately, the "SELF-HEALING JEEP" has not yet been invented!
