Default Starting the Cherokee.?.?

Hey Ive got a 93 Cherokee and Ive had it for just over 2 months...
Cant wait to beef it up once I get the cash for it.
Anyway.. Ive fixed a few things on it so far ordered parts and painted a bit...
Its an automatic.. I'm wondering why every once in awhile it doesnt want to start up in park and sometimes has to be started in neutral... only happens every so often and doesn't seem like a real problem because the previous owner said it would happen randomly but always started eventually after turning the key over enough times... I figured out that instead of turning the key until it starts I could instead start it in neutral first try every time that happens....
Its not only a cold start problem or anything.. It can happen even when the engine is at temperature. I dont know if its the crank sensor or what... Im no gear head so I thought why not try and get some help on here. Thanks in advance for any help

Check your neutral safety switch. I have a manual so I cant tell you exactly where it is. Pick up a repair book at your local auto parts store and it will tell you where it is and how to check/replace it.

I would say that it is neutral safety switch located on the passenger side of your tranny toward the engine. They have grease inside them and it gets very sticky due to the heat over time. Before you buy a new one I would remove the old one.Just unplug it at the elec. connection and remove the one bolt that holds it on the transmission. Also the nut that is on the shaft,it has washer with some tabs you will need to bend the tabs out before you can remove the nut.Gently pry it straight out.I put my tranny in the neutral position before I started.Once you have it off lay it on something flat and take it apart with the 3 screws.Pull it apart gently because there are two contacts inside that are spring loaded.Once you have it apart pull the contacts out being careful not to loose the springs underneath them.Clean all the components with a good electrical contact cleaner.Put it back together with some di-electric grease (not to much just lightly). You should be able to push the contacts down by hand and the spring pushes them out freely. Hope this helps, solved mine.

Good Luck Man!!!

Cleaned it and threw some white lithium grease in it!
Was definitely the old grease holding the springs back so the connectors were not touching the other side... Dealership said it would cost $400 to fix but I did this with $18 of cleaner and grease. Worked like a charm and I have not had a problem for over 2 months... Always nice when things work out.
Here is an amazing how-to (http://www.jeepin.com/features/nss/index.asp)
