Always begin by cleaning both battery post and terminals. They should all be shiny bright. Even a hint of dull gray is enough oxide to act as a significant resistance.

Here's the tool you need:

Put some anti freeze in it. It won't crank over when the block is frozen.

In all seriousness I would start with the battery terminals and grounds.

Oh, and next time it happens try starting it in neutral. It could be the neutral safety switch. I know mine tends to act up more in cold weather.

If you can jab, or "smack" the starter while someone has the key turned, and it goes, most likely you need a new starter. Once for me it was the cable loose on the solonoid though.

I kinda fryed that by just undoing the solenoid wire and touching battery and hitting with roof bolt but I think with someone else it might work better

it got clogged with snow and probably froze.... I would invest in a block heater if it is that cold on the regualar... if snow got up there melted when the snow was hot then froze after it cooled down.... i believe that is what happened...

SOunds like bad grounds to me, same exact thing happened to my renix two winters ago, the cold just finished the cables off. I would recomend upgrading them while you replace them..

Ouch bro, try tapping the starter like previous post said. If that eventually works bad starter. How many cca are you pushing on your battery? I have 800 and dont ever have any issues. But the coldest I have seen it sense owning the xj is 16..
