Starter Safety switch?!?!?
Hey guys,
Since I don't have a manual, I got a simply stupid question.
Does the standard shift Cherokees have a clutch safety switch to keep the starter from engaging?
I got the XJ together and started but the starter won't engage with the key. I figure before I go deciphering a wiring issue I'd ask here.
Quick update, I got enough vacuum figured out to make it run, but this 4.0 has been sitting for 10 to 15 years and promptly lost the water pump, so that is on the list tomorrow to fix along with a new thermostat (180 degree). Its running rich but its running. I'm going to strip all the vacuum lines later too and replace with exactly what is needed to run.
ie MAP, Fuel PRessure regulator, CCV (crank case vent), power brakes, and vacuum for the cab and front end. No cat to warry about on this one, someone already replaced it with a straight pipe plus there is no smog checks in Arkansas.
Thanks

I looked under the dash and couldn't find a clutch safety switch.
I've got a gremlin in that the starter won't engage with the key. The wiring on this heep isn't the best either but thats to be expected with a teenage kid as the previous owner.
Turn the key to start and the lights on the dash come on, so the key is engaging something, just not getting power to the solenoid.
