I have a 1988 XJ with 156,00 miles. It has a strong L-6 engine. When I start the XJ it goes to between 1800 and 2200 rpm. Sometimes it drops down to about 900 rpm and sometimes it will not idle down until the jeep is driven. It runs fine otherwise.

In the course of PM and repairs I have replace the IAC and TPS. I have repaired all vacume leaks.

Anyone have any suggestions???

Mine does the same thing if i move the tps and do not put it back just right,I would loosen it just a bit and move it just slightlly and see if it helps out,if you get it to far out of wack it will cause shifting problems.

 

I had the TPS go bad on my 2000 Dodge and the idle would bounce all over the place.

TPS's are relatively inexpensive if it is the actual issue.

 

THanks. I had a mechanic check hte TPS and he adjusted it according to the book. I'll try moving the TPS.
