Sounds like a goofy ignit. switch. But you said you replaced the entire system.

But catching & quitting when you release the key "on" sounds messed up.

Well a bad ballast won't let it keep running. That's a good start. If your FP is in specs. that will eliminate that. BTW......did you check yer tank for trash?
Also I've seen the hose from the MAP sensor to the throttle body (bad) will keep em from staying alive. My sons 89 had a choking hose & when it sucked together she died.
