Star shaped bolt on transfer case
NP231 has a star shaped bolt (like an inverted torx head) Its on the top of the case and goes from the back of the case into the front on the lip.
How do you take that off to take the case apart?

Use the E-Torx sockets to remove those silly damned screws, then replace them with a hex head or a hex socket head. They're still a standard thread - either SAE or ISO - so you can find replacements easily enough.
They're used to make manufacturing easier...

Are you sure it's an inverted torx?
It's most commonly a 10 mm 12 point bolt head.
A few torx ones are reputed to exist ... but I can't say I ever recall seeing one for all the cases I've split open.
