I have a 96 Cherokee country 4.0 104,000mi.
It will just stall out of the blue right after a stop. After stalling it wont start up right away, and smells like it is flooding. I pulled a plug after trying to start it again, and it was soaked with fuel. Sometimes it will act up without stalling. When you punch the pedal it almost dies out and the revs up for a while before idling back down. (it will do this in or out of gear) Then most of the time it will run just fine until I forget about it and STALL! . I tried shaking different wiring under the hood to make it stall while it was running good but can't make it do it while I'm monitoring it! I don't know where to start! All I know is it is a real pain when your light turns green and there I am still sitting.

Anyone heard of this before? Thanks in advance.

 

I would start by testing the "throttle position sensor". That is the one engine management sensor that I can think of that could be responsible for this symptom.

And also verify fuel pressure (with a gauge) to be sure that you don't have something like a flaky fuel pressure regulator. For a 96, you should have 49 psi at idle, plus or minus 5 psi.

 

Thanks I will start there. The TPS was also my first thought.

 

No dead spots it the TPS... I drove that thing all around shook all the wiring tapped all the sensors and could not get it to act up again! It seems it only acts up when I am not ready for it!

I have not scanned it because the check engine light never came on.

 

Have you considered checking your CPS sensor? (Crankshaft positioning sensor?) Have you done any research on that?

 

Tune up? Ignition coil? CKP? CPS? bad ground? Check all these.

 

I like.ignition.... I would lean towards weak or intermittent spark.... or map sensor or mat sensor.

 

Plugs, wires, cap and rotor. If you got plenty, swap the coil as well.
The 4.0l 6i will drink all the juice you can get in her, if the spark is strong.

Looks like I have a lot to look at. The problem is; whatever it is, is not bad all the time. Makes me think it might be the coil, a condenser, or a short.

 

Run through the wiring and make sure a packrat or packhuman hasn't made holes. Clean grounds and battery terminals...

 

For those of you who are still wondering about the result.....
It has not stalled on me since starting this thread. If it IS fixed this is all I did.

Loosened the screws on the pcm (heard about that on a different thread)
Took the dizzy apart and put it back together.
Tightened the ground cable at the battery.


It has been a month now and still truckin' so... !

 

Don't know if it was related but....

Started stalling out of the blue again. A little different this time. Would run on 3 cyl for a little and then die.

I replaced the crankshaft pos sensor and so far has fixed it.

 

Same thing was happening on my 96. Cos took care of it
