Stalling with no check engine light
Hey everyone, I recently got a 2000 xj 4.0 and I am having stalling issues almost daily. Normally stalls 1-2 times in the a.m. when it is warming up. It has also stalled at an intersection. Idle seems fine and runs great otherwise, just cuts out without warning. I have had the TPS replaced, Crank sensor replaced, battery is good, throttle body cleaned. Running out of ideas here. Any input is appreciated

1. Bosch plugs are bad news for the 4.0 I was unconvinced until I saw "multiple" threads from people that had misfires with Bosch that immediately went away when plugs were switched. From pretty extensive experience with the XJ, I would recommend the NGK plug for the distributorless coil pack system. Champions are the plug of choice for 84-99.
2. Load test the battery. It is the ONLY conclusive way of determining battery condition. And yes, you can have a battery that is strong enough to start the engine, but marginal enough to give the engine management system fits (including STALLING). Any parts store will perform a load test for free. Do it.

Maybe a map sensor? Check your IAC. It may be dirty or bad. I think the TPS only tells the computer how much the throttle body is open at idle to compensate air flow. If the IAC is not doing its job it can cause you to stall at idle.

hey man... x2 TJWalker and Ken .... no bosch b1tches for the xj 4.0, always check the battery and it is most probably the iac going bad if it's dirty/original .... good luck!
I had similar stalling issues, mine was a bad ignition module/coil. Like yours, mine ran fine, idled fine, it would just suddenly without warning shut off. Mostly at intersections when I was either stopped or in process of stopping and if it sat at an idle for more than a few minutes.
