Default Stall in water

I went in a whole or creek crossing that came up to just under the head lights. The motor wasnt wet at all or the distrubutor. But it stalled in the water. A buddy pulled me out. I cracked it and it spit water out of the tail pipe and cracked right up. But I'm trying to figure out why it stalled any ideas?

Water got into something!!
When your fan hit the water it may have loaded the engine enough to cause a stall. Or the fan splashed water onto wiring and caused a short. i.e. Ignition coil.....
