Squealing
I just purchased a fairly low mileage 90 Cherokee. My problem that arose after I got it home is, after I have driven for awhile at normal op temps the I am hearing a squeal (not a normal brake squeal) when the brakes are applied. I could be just sitting with the brakes applied and she just starts squealing. Anyone out there hear of this and know a solution. I have been told it might be something with the ABS but that was just a guess.

What part of the truck is the sound coming from front rear left right. Are you sure its the brakes.

I would take the wheel off and inspect everything. Make sure your brakes are in good order and then check your hub. The bearings may be going out. My blazer i used to have made sound like that till i got a new hub but it was usually when i was moving. How does is sound in 4 wheel drive? And are you positive that it is not your belts.

My guess is that it is the ABS pump. They are located on the passenger side fender under the coolant bottle. I am still pretty new to XJs, but I think that a 90 is still using a Benix system that has the remote pump and solenoid. These systems are notorious for going bad. If it is the pump and you decide to keep the ABS system its gonna cost you about 700 bucks or thats at least what Advance Auto quoted me. I just covered over to a power brake system from a similar year XJ. Mine is a 89 so I used a 88's. Only have to change the booster and master cyclinder and the prop valve. Helps to already have the lines from the MS to the PV. You will then have to cut you factory lines, put on new ends, flare the tubing, bend it back to fit and bam you are done.

I had somewhat of the same problem, i bleed my brakes and then filled the resivoir full. After that i used a turkey baster to remove the top till it was almost empty, refilled it and the noise went away. Just my 2 cents
