Sputtering while cruising

Sputtering while cruising
I'm planning on purchasing an 89 cherokee 4X4 4.0 automatic here soon and the owner said the only problem he has is it will randomly sputter while cruising like it's misfiring. He told me that it could be the CPS, but from what I've read on here so far is it probably isn't that. What else could cause this problem? Again, he said it seldomly does it and it's random. Thanks for any help

No, I'm going to test drive it today so I'll ask him then. I guess it would have been helpful if I had said how many miles were on it, 214K. I'll probably do a tune up on it myself if I do buy it.
