I picked up an ignition coil today and plan on replacing it tomorrow to see if that helps. I took it to a different more competent mechanic, and they couldn't narrow down the issue since it wasn't happening for them, but as soon as I drove home it happened, heh. It also shut down my XJ yesterday while driving home from class, in traffic, heh. Truck started shaking when I was inching up, then shut off. After the ignition coil, plugs and wires are next, then I might look into the firing after that, since one of the mechanics were saying my symptoms sound like a firing issue, so..

Good plan so far. I would have gone with plugs and wires before the coil but hey, that's good reassurance doing that! Hope that helps your issue

Yeah, honestly I see it being more of a coil issue, and although I plan on upgrading the plugs and wires this weekend, I wanted to do piece by piece.

Thanks for the help so far!

Well keep us updated as you do each piece! I'm curious as to what it turns out being. Still thinking a regular ol' tune up will make a world of difference.

Ignition Control Module/Coil could be a possibility. Dont't forget about the Crank Position Sensor. That little SOB is sneaky and devious, and causes various ignition/timing chaos.

So the weather has been cooler lately. Back when I was having this issue, it was in the 80s. It's been in the 60s and I haven't had a single sputter at all. Possibly something when I floor it, but nothing noticeable. I'm a little confused now. I haven't had the time to replace my ignition coil, since I can't find the right tool to remove the bolts connecting it. I am looking into hood vents soon, so that will help the heat issue. If this is indeed heat related.

I'll keep that in mind. Could it have come loose or be going bad?

having a similar issue with my 90 right now. its only occasional and under hard acceleration like half throttle or so it kinda bogs with lack of power and sputters then let off and get on it again and itll clear out and take off like a bat out of hell.. just recently did a full tune up and a new cat so im leaning towards the O2 sensor

Mine did this and the problem ended up being the fuel sensor.

Well mine's a 1992, and my state doesn't have a law on vehicles with emissions before 95, although I don't think this issue is exhaust related. Since it's a 92, I don't have an onboard computer, so would that rule out the O2 and possibly fuel sensor? This issue also stopped when the weather got cooler.

Thanks

Definitely does not rule out the o2 sensor. Still think you should do the ignition coil since you got the part. Then do a full tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel and air filter). Then, if the problem persists, test the throttle position sensor and think about replacing that Airtex fuel pump with a quality Bosch one.

Alright, good to know. Out of the possibilities you mentioned, do we know if any of them have issues when hot? I'm dumbfounded that the issue has stopped, and the only thing that changed was the weather. Aside from the ignition coil, I have a snorkel on the way, and a full tune up planned once I have time and space.

Thanks!

You mentioned interest in Hood Vents. These are the best I've seen. I have these on my 89'.
