is this stuff hard, or rubbery? never used it before.

 

Alright first of all...Take the carpet out...Herculiner isn't ment to stick to carpet...Plus I took mine out and started seeing the beginning of rust on my floors...Second Herculiner is liquid at first...Once dried it is a hard almost rubber...Similar to what you'd see like on a track at a high school...Third noise will be lowered once the lining is on and dried...the more coats you put on the less noise you will hear...Fourth the heat will also go away the more coats you add...I've personally used a full gallon of it which gave me around 2 coats and the heat isn't unbearable on the tranny hump...it exists...but isn't too bad. I'm sure another gallon of it and I'll be set!

 

No, this will not work, the chemicals in Herculiner will eat the carpet and it will never dry. If this is your plan just go and get the rubber carpet. The carpet in an XJ is a sponge, the point is to get it out to prevent the floor pan from rusting and to make it easy to clean out. If this is your DD you need to decide what is more important, function or comfort.

I did this on a 91 renegade I just sold. I soaked the carpet with water and the nastiest gumbo mud Kansas has to offer and decided it was time to go. A word of advice would be to have it professionally done (or at least spray it on rollers cant get it thick enough), taking the drain plugs out first and saving/replacing the carpet and cutting it so you can "easily" replace it when you are not wheeling.

 

HAHHAHAHA! It would look like you took your carpet and dipped it in a bunch of tar!

 

Just put your carpet back on top of it. I have a strong floor and the comfort of carpet.

ok, thanks everyone. i thought it would stick and i would be able to just keep rolling on coats until the top layer was smooth. my floor underneath is fine, but the carpet is junk.

 

The top wont be as smooth as the professionally done stuff, but on the plus side its rough to hold the carpet in place better. I wouldnt do it on top either, If your going to use it regardless put it on the bottom to protect from rusting. For those who say its hot, haha its not as bad as they say. Put a few more coats around the tunnel and areas of high wear, that will fix the issue, but its obviously going to be warmer then with carpet in.

 

Its not hot until you are sitting in traffic on the highway or on the trail.....then it gets hot. Like standing too close to a camp fire hot. I have three heavy coats on mine.
