Default Speedometeter cuts in and out

Hey guys so ever since I bought my xj (stock) the speedometer will work work work.... and then just cut out when I'm driving? (At random) Now since then I have lifted my jeep and put on 31s. I know I'll need a new speedometer gear to correct the difference in speed which seems to be +10%. But will that new gear fix my speedometer? Like am I having a mechanical issue or a electric issue? Anyone with an opinion or idea? Thanks!

Start with some visual inspection.
Trace the wires from your speed sensor so see if it is chaffed or kinked.
Check the speed sensor to make sure it's not loose. Could even take it out and check that little gear.
