Default Speedometer problems

Hey guys,

Here's the story, I got my XJ a couple months back. When I first got it, the speedometer would work fine for the most part. It would give me a correct reading and would only jump around a little bit when accelerating. Over time, it got worse and worse. It started to jump around more and more. Then, I took my Jeep into a shop, got my rear main seal, oil pan gasket, drain plug seal, motor mounts, serpentine belt all replaced and cooling system flushed. When i picked up my car, the speedometer wasn't working at all, would just stay at 0. That happened the first few days of having it. It's now been about 2 weeks since then and now the speedometer only works perfectly and is accurate when the car is cold. But after a few minutes of driving and the car warms up, it starts to jump around like crazy again (between 0 and 85) like it did before the repairs.

To me it sounds like the VSS is bad. Because I figure if it was a problem with the gauge cluster, it wouldn't even work for that short time while cold. Any thoughts?

And would this be the correct sensor to use? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SMP-SC105/

I have a 96 XJ with AW4, NP231, 5" lift with 33" tires

Sound like bad Speed sensor. Pull yours so you know which one you need. There are a couple different versions used. Not done one in my 1996 but there were 3 available for my 1993.

I would also check the sensor ot make sure someone didn't pull it an dput it back incorrectly, because they will do weird things when in the wrong position. On the housing, there's several sets of numbers (i.e. 27-31, 32-38, etc.) Make sure the range that goes with your gear (i.e. 32-38 for 35 teeth) is pointing down in the 6 o'clock position so that the gear engages fully.

Awesome thanks a lot, this is really helpful. I'll try this when I get the chance to
