I’m new to the forums so sorry if I post it on the wrong section but I recently bought a 98 Jeep Cherokee it has a np242. I’m having a problem with my speedometer not working, I did the cluster reset and the gauges worked fine I even pulled the cluster off all wires looked good. I also checked my speedometer gear and it looked fine but I did notice that inside the case it was slightly chewed up idk why but the shaft appears to look fine. I’ve contacted the seller and he said he was told that the shaft had to be replaced for the speedometer to work again. If thats the case wouldn’t it be easier to just buy another transfer case? Please look at attached photos There’s fresh fluid in there now, and in case anyone is wondering 4x4 works fine and drive fine no issues at all
Okay, I do know the gear holder (insert) has to be indexed (rotated) to get the gears to mesh. It's designed that way to adjust to different gear sizes. I once saw a picture where the insert was actually marked with arrows to align with an index mark for each gear ratio.
Okay, I just checked the FSM for my 2000 and it shows markings for the number of gear teeth on the adapter that must be aligned with the case at the 6 o'clock position. I hope that helps. The drive worm looks good in your picture.
x2. The speedo gear is slightly offset/angled from the center of the assembly and can be installed in 4 different rotations to accommodate the different speedo gear sizes. If it's not index correctly, then the gear doesn't engage the shaft.
