Default speedo & odom not working, is this the reason? pic inside

doing a search on the forum I came across a few pictures of the transfer case and saw a plug that was connected to a wire harness and remembered seeing that my Cherokee didn't have it.

I bought the Cherokee very recently and the speedo and odometer were not working. asked the previous owner when it had stopped and he said it happened before he got the car. the odometer has only 103,000 miles on it.

before taking apart the cluster I want to be sure.

this is my Cherokee's transfer case and disconnected plugs

That shiny brass looking fitting there is your speed sensor and you're supposed to have something on there that has a cable going inside to the back of the cluster. The black 4 plug fitting is for vacuum lines.

To me, it looks like you're missing at least that section of the speedo cable. If you can pull the cluster out, and it only takes a few minutes, you can check the back to see if there's anything connected to the back of the speedo.

No cable= No speedo= No odometer.

it's a 1995 XJ. guess I'll have to stick my hand in and see if the cable is still there.

1995? Okay, that won't have a cable then, it'd be electrical....Maybe someone put in the wrong speed sensor unit....

a harness and plug then...

i'm thinking that the wires covered with electrical tape, that can be seen in the pic, may have something to do with this.

tomorrow the new 3'' suspension will be installed so i'll have more room under it to look for the missing plugs and wires.

thanks for the input

It's possible they might be. Any chance you can unwrap them and see what colors they are? You could possibly compare them to a wiring diagram and see if they do in fact feed the speedo.

After a little digging, the little black thing with the four prongs is your vacuum switch. What that feeds, I'm not sure, but someone will. I highly doubt it's causing any issues, but I just that I'd point that out so you know. Could you get a better photo of just the threaded fitting there on the tail housing?

I know when my cable broke on my 01 it screwed up my gas mileage until it was fixed. Wondering if it is affecting anything on yours

Yeah that's an older style case. You can tell by the more of a cone shaped tail cone housing and the fact that it should have a cable driven speedometer

That's what I was thinking, actually. Older T-Case into newer Jeep....I was about to suggest trying to get a speedo unit for his year, but you guys beat me to it....

what you guys are telling me is that the transfer case is not the original one. that apparently it was replaced with an older model along the way.

now is making sense why the speed sensor was not connected. i'm still gonna get under it in order to find the wires and see if they are in good shape.

will an older speed sensor plug to the wire harness of my year?

Thats a very early case, 80s era.. Don't know when they stopped using the vaccum disconnect front axle but I know it was just the first couple years of production.
Your probably going to have to find a late model TC or tailconle to fix.. I beleave you could do it by doing a SYE upgrade.
