New to Jeeps and just purchased a 96 X Cherokee Country that has a broken/not operating speedo. Is this simply a cable replacement/hookup or is it a digital set up?

it's a two piece cable setup. there is a small 1 foot piece that is attached to the rear of the speedometer, then goes to a junction reduction type block, then another piece about 4.5 feet long that goes through the dash and attaches to the transfer case. now, there is a gear in the transfer case where the cable attaches. the cable could be spinning inside the gear, or maybe the gear has stripped teeth, or it may not be hooked up somewhere so as the odometer won't clock up the mileage.
the speedo cable attaches to the transfer case on the upper drivers side. it has a hex nut that attaches to a part that is held in by a small 2 finger type clamp. look for that first.
