Speedo no go

Driving today and the speedo went to 0. I know I was still moving, because the rattling didn't stop. Last winter it took a few miles for the speedo to warm up and start working. I am not sure where the speed signal generator is. I have a 91 XJ with the auto transmission. Any suggestions??

COuple things could be wrong here... The gauge could be failing... the cable could be failing or the gear could be stripped. I'd start by checking on the tail housing of the transfer case for the speedo cable.

Run it with a drill and see if the gauge works.
