Default Speed sensor - '92, 6 cyl.

I have replaced the sensor (at the top of the bell housing) three times. They usually last about 6 months, and start to work inconsistently at first, then finally give out altogether.
Is this a common problem? And what can cause them to quit so frequently?
Thanks.

Anyone have any ideas on this? Would this be the CPS?

The sensor is the CPS crankshaft position sensor and it is not normal that it lasts only 6 months. Did you notice some damage, scratches or metal shavings or also mud on them when you replaced the old? Did you check the connector pins and wires?

Thanks for the reply.

No mud, and I have replaced it three times. It works, then doesn't, then works.
One was stubborn when the engine was cold, but worked fine after it warmed up, but the problem got worse and worse.
I don't know if there is something else wrong that works in conjunction to fry them. And I'm just tired of being stuck in the middle if nowhere.
The location where it is mounted has to be THE WORST place possible. Can't get a socket or even a ratchet wrench on it. Fingers don't fit. Almost got tempted to cut a hole in the firewall and access it from under the dash! Very frustrating.

My guess is bad wiring, possible short somewhere. I would try to follow the wires and check for damage.
