Default Spectre air filter cleaning

I have a cold air intake on my Cherokee and use one of the Spectre filters which can be cleaned and re-oiled and used over and over. It was pretty dirty mainly because I have nothing covering the side of it and with several weeks of snow and dirty rock-salted roads blowing up into it. I got one of the cleaning/re-oiling kits and followed the directions but wasnt happy with how clean it "looks". Is it just going to be dark from now on even if it is actually clean? What do you guys suggest as far as blocking this type of filter from road and fan blow-up? It`s now laying basically where the old filter housing use to be on that little ledge. Thanks in advance

Prefilter or dust sock i don't now if spectre has but k&n and AEM do it just slips over the filter very popular with the Baja and Jeepspeed crowd.
