I stayed out wheeling overnight this weekend and I learned two things first off that i need speakers in my rear hatch so that when i open it i have some music by the fire. secondly i would like to add lights to the inside of the hatch because dome lights are just not good enough sometimes.

who has put speakers in their rear hatch where speakers were not already a factory option there? got some build pics?

and where is the best place to find 4" round led clear lens and clear bulb flush mount with rubber gommet lights without breaking the bank?

some xjs had speakes there some didnt check and see if yours is wired for em... mine wasnt : ( so i never put em in lol.......and the leds buy clear leds strips or bars from autozone or w/e parts store ya got!! (iv got like 8 so i shop my parts around lol)

 

you could use a cheap-o LED light bar from wally world or the local parts store.

and for the rear sound solution i got a sound bar from the JY and mounted it up. came with the factory wiring harness that clips right in behind the drivers C-Pillar.

Re-upholtered it and it looks and sounds great with the back hatch open!

my jeep was wired for the rear hatch speakers, every jeep is you just need the harness adapter

 

whats the plugs look like on the harness? cause im pretty sure i could just cut and splice it if i had it !!

 

in my rear hatch(i have the base model, 2 factory door speakers only and manual everything) i had 2 un-used wiring clips that were bundled up right below the wiper motor .

i wish i had a picture but i alligator clipped my rear hatch panel on haha. i didnt like having no hatch panel and the clips were broken so i used alligator clips in the factory holes until i can find a matching grey one.

 

huh cause dad and i both looked and couldnt find any unused wires madey they ripped em out when they cracked the panel

 

I have two 6x9's Rockford-Fosgates, mounted in the rear hatch. (They just fit) Use a jigsaw to open the mounting hole. I did run new speaker wire. 16 GA. One piece each, no splices. Beats the crap out of 5.25's sized speakers there. ( factory originals) Don't ever trust factory wire (usually 18 GA. anyways) or the previous owner. If your not using the rear pass. side pocket. I've a 10" sub mounted in mine. mount a cigg. lighter plug-in. Or the other side cargo-space fender well. You can buy them with flip-up covers, when not in use. Wouldn't look out place either. Right now I have 5.25's speakers in the front doors. 6x9's in the rear hatch. 10" sub in the rear pocket. (all Rockford's) A Pyle 1400 watt, 5 channel amp. under the rear seat. Gives me 250 watts each, to the 4 speakers. And 400 watts to the sub. Sounds great! Like a concert hall. More than I ever need. Or could stand to listen to.

 

I have the factory soundbar already with soundstream 5.25 all the way around. I am thinking about a 6.5 component for the rear hatch, I just wasnt sure what i had room for so I will pull the panel off and look. I will run all the wire, I am pretty sure there is no factory wire there.

I like the acessory plug idea but i also want something more fixed so I am going to go with trailer reverse lights wired on a switch to my dome lights so I can turn them off when they are not desired.

 

You will break all the tabs almost everytime you pull those panels. So just drill two holes in the bottom half of the panel and use two fine self tapping screws there. that is what I did looks stock and works great.

 

Mine came with the factory "Premium sound pkg." Which was a pioneer tape head unit (Have to remember It's '91) and 4 Jensen 5.25 speakers. Not much bass, Always sounded like tin cans to me. But, when I replaced the front door speakers. I found a pair of wires, running off in series. Off each door speaker. After chasing them down, I found a pair of 1" tweeters under the dash. (I thought they where lower dash vents at the time) I left them in, and always forget to mention them. But anyway, I was trying to achieve a component type set-up. (And if I where to do it again, I'd use actual component speakers.) High freq. in the very front, mid high freq. in the front doors, Mid range to low freq. in rear, And extra Low freq. in rear. (Sub, but it's uni-directional, and does need to point at you.) is how I have it set up. Controlled thru the head unit. (It pays to use a good head unit) It's like laying between a pair of great sounding house speakers. Not only does sound good, but you can feel vibrations from it. I also have 4, 6x8 250 watt, Rockford-Fosgates (3-way). I'm not using. Paid $140 a pair for them. Had them in a ford Explore (less than a yaer) Willing to sell, make an offer.

upgraded wiring for the door speakers. Its all monster cable all the way around.

I swear by Diamond Audio. By what you pay for you get quality that is un matched. The D3 series speakers (which i run in my sisters car) sound better than my old alpine s series which were double the price for half the quality and sound.

I also swear by Rockford Fosgate as the quality you get is un matched- the amps are most of the time under rated(each amp comes with a build sheet that specifies the exact output) and the quality you get from them is un matched as well. The price can not be beat either.


I would suggest to you any of these brands.
