My 91 doesn't have any in the dash.. In the door it's factory 5.25" and rear hatch is the same. Now I have been told that in the newer post 96 models you can put 6.5" in the doors but the rear hatch is stil 5.25". In my 91 I don't think without modification a 6.5" speaker would mount.

Some XJs had speakers in "knee panel" of the dash. Not too sure on the size of those as I never ran across em. Call a nearby BestBuy and ask the car audio idiots to look it up. Their books are actually accurate. I am thinking that the dash speakers are probably 4s and mostly tweaters.

You can install 6.5s in the doors of ANY XJ. I installed 6.5s in my 92. My '84 In installed 6x9s in the doors. Not advisable though..

All I had to do on my '92 was slightly enlarge the hole by bending the edges in just slightly. Done it on several XJ doors. It works fine. Get some nice 6.5s and you will see how much you need to bend. It's not too much. I probably didn't need to bend my '92 as I installed my speakers on the outside of the doorpanel by removing the stock plastic grilles.

Don't put 6x9s in the hatch. I did on my '84 and it was nasty messing with the fiberglass. Plus once you finally GET the speakers installed, they will randomly work their way out and fall when you open the hatch. The fiberglass doesn't like screws at all. Every time you slam it shut you pop the screws a bit. It really sucks. Don't do it. Stick 6.5s in the doors and locate a soundbar for the headliner.

Here is the soundbar I pulled from a '95 Laredo and the junkyard last October. Same color as my interior too! With my awesome Infinity 6022i References all around.. It ROCKS!

Stock XJ speakers are round 5.25 inch in the doors and hatch. Some aftermarket 5.25s are SMALLER than the openings in the doors, so go with 6.5s in the front.

Default Speaker Size and fit for '99 Cherokee?

I am completely new to the world of Jeep. I just bought my Cherokee last friday. My question is what size speakers do I have, and what size to replace them with? I have a pair of AWESOME JL Audio 6" VR600-CX's, which I would like to use... Am I able to? The depth looks about the same as the 5 1/4" speakers in the front. I want to replace the other speakers in the car, but dont know where to look or what sizes! Thanks for all your help!
