Spare tire is a different size
I have a 2000 classic with the factory spare being a 225-16-70 on the icon rim. I'm currently running 255-70-16's on 1st gen MOABs I have stock open diffs. I don't think a spare 255-70-16 would fit in the spare location and I need the room. Any harm on either diff using the spare on a limited basis ( <50 miles ) if absolutely necessary ? I'm guessing I could always make sure the spare is on the front and run 2WD or would it not matter being an open 8.25 C rear...thoughts?

I've honestly thought about this already as I don't have a full size spare. I see no problem running another size tire to get back home or at least out of the trail. Don't be locked obviously, if you have the 4x4 full time transfer case... then I don't think it would matter where it's run in 4x4. If you only have part-time, then I wouldnt run it in 4x4, only 2x4 but still in either position. The open diffs should compensate for the differance in wheel speed but unless if you have the 4x4 fulltime( for pavement allowing the front diff and rear diff to travel at differant speeds)... I wouldn't run it in 4x4. Just seems the combination of turning combined with the already differance in wheel speed might complicate things.
Thanks for the info guys! I do have the NP242 and love it in the snow as it responds much quicker than I expected.... I'll keep my eyes peeled for another used Moab and I plan on Duratracs in the warmer weather. I have Firestone winterforce tires now and unless it's total ice... It sticks like a fly on sticky paper absolutely unbelievable and for $104 ea great deal except they will probably only last 20-25k miles. FYI way better ride with same good handling running 30 psi vs 35 psi

255/70R16 is a 30" tire, it will fit fine in the stock location. Actually securing it may be a pain in the rear as the original hold-down bolt thingy was designed for the donut. But anyone handy with a torch and a vise should be able to bend some threaded rod into a decent replacement.
