Hey there, i just put 5.25's in the front doors, and 6.5's in the soundbar, and im still not getting the sound quality i want. I want to put subs in but idk where, what size, if i need an amp, or pretty much anything about sound systems. All i know is i want it to sound good. Now i dont have much money now but i can save up for what i need. any ideas on how to make my XJ sound kick ***???

it depends on what kind of music you listen to country 10's rock 10's-12's rap or electro 12's-15's blow eardrums and **** off neighbors 18's but if you just want some depth to your music 2 12's and 150-300 watts will be great.

or look into one of KFXHellRaiser's custom enclosures that tucks a 10" sub into the lil cubby in the cargo area....i run a 10" Kicker w/ a 350 w amp in one of these and it BUMPS...

I have seen the boxes that fit in the cubby for 10's in quadratec i believe. They dont take up much space in the cargo area, and sound pretty good from what i have heard. I had a sony explode head unit with 2 polk 5.25s in my last jeep and the sound quality was pretty good. Could have used a sub and the speakers in the hatch, but they were great speakers.

What headunit. I bought 4 5.25 that sounded great but had a crap dual headunit that made the whole system sound like crap. I switched over to a slightly more expensive Xplod headunit and I am satisfied. The only thing I really care about though is loud enough to hear on the freeway with the windows down and doesnt crack with the bass up some.

Your music will sound distorted if your system is underpowered. That means you will need some type of amp. To hear your music well with the windows down you will need good midrange & hi sound. I'd say a decent 4 channel or 6 channel amp would suffice to power what you currently have plus a 10" sub.
In my XJ I have a cheap aftermarket Sanyo unit, hooked into a 4 channel amp that powers 6 speakers & 2 tweeters, plus a dedicated mono amp to power a 10" sub built into the cubby (and I built it myself years ago. Easy). It hammers when I want it to, but after 4 years, my neighbors don't even know I have a system in there: it's not what you have, but how you use it.
A decent 10" in the right box can give excellent sound. Build it into the cubby & you still have all your trunk space.

I had simple 340 watt amp and 10" kenwood sub in my truck and it produced a great sound. Not too bassy and no thump outside. Just good full range sound. Right now it sits in my garage because I have been too busy to hook it up, plus my wife thinks a 37 year old guy shouldn't have stuff like this in his car... even though her stock Grand Cherokee has an amazing sounding system in it. Been trying to find someone local that would take it in trade to replace my rear main seal and oil pan gasket... so far no luck.

If you want truely good sound quality youre gonna have to ditch the coaxial speakers and pick up components. You can get a pretty good set for around 300 bucks but youre gonna need two sets and an amp to drive them. Just my opinion though. Ive been doing car audio for 12 years and coaxials will never touch the sound quality of component speakers. Coaxial are speakers with the tweeter built in to the woofer and components are a seperate tweeter and woofer with an external crossover.
You can also get much better sound quality by powering all your speakers with an external amp. Its a much cheaper route than buying component speakers.

You didn't say whether you have an after market stereo or not... If you don't, this is your first step. If your looking to go cheap, Sony makes a good stereo for the price. While your at it, purchase a 8 gauge amp wire kit and install that. Then from there you can add a 4 channel amp to your door speakers. Or just run a 2 channel for some woofers. 8 gauge wire will be good for amps from about 300-1000w.
