Default snapped cylinder head cover bolt

Was reinstalling my cylinder head cover and snapped the first bolt I tried to torque down.

Used the torque specs found here: http://jeephorizons.com/tech/99_40l_torque_specs.html

Says 1999 4.0 cylinder head cover bolts are 85 ft lbs. Turned until POP. Luckily there was enough of a nub to twist out.

1. Do I need to replace these bolts with new? I've replaced the grommets with the ones that came with the gasket kit.

2. Is 85 ft lbs correct?

Thanks
Russ

your torque spec sheet sez 85 INCH pound for those nuts/studs; 85 ft lbs would be a bit much

More like 7ft lbs. Actually the specs are given in in/lbs but my info is out in the garage. I just installed a new Fel Pro gasket the other day. I didn't use a torque wrench because my 3 don't go that low. These valve covers install with metal things called torque limiters. As I followed the tightening sequence I could feel them bottom out on the head. I just gave them an extra snug and called it good. Pretty fool proof gasket. Of course you'll need to replace the broken one and if you over tightened any others they may be over stressed already.

How much torque do you think you put on the rest of the hardware? Wondering if you may have damaged the gasket to.

I will share something and just jesting with you, But the beer cap could be the issue... The rating is listed as "inch" pounds not "Foot" pounds.

Those should have a sleeve that bottoms out and you can't go anymore. I have always just bottomed these and then just a gentle 1/4 turn more.

This was the first and only one. After I snapped it I knew I was doing something wrong. Not sure I've I'll be able to tell of the gasket is ruined.

The beer cap could be the issue... true... but if beer is wrong... I don't want to be right.

lol, I have done my share of "beer repairs" that didn't turn out as expected. Taken a lot of stuff back apart and had to redo it, "Where's this bolt go?"

But if that had the sleeve like it should the gasket is probably still OK. The sleeve should have kept it from smashing the gasket too much. Unless it smashed the sleeve? Might check that before you put it back. If the sleeve is OK the gasket should be also.
