Default chrysler 8.25 cross pin wont come out

hey,

im replacing my wheel bearings on my chrysler 8.25 jeep xj 94..
got the differential cover off and removed the retainer lock pin but the cross pin that keeps the axles in place so the c clips wont fall out that pin wont come lose ..

it is stuck on something it moves freely but barely just in and out i can twist it aswell which is not easy cause its not out that far.. i read on many post this pin should just slide out even fall out after the lock bolt is removed but it doesnt..
i've had a socket on the oppersite end of the cross pin and tapped on it with a hammer but it wont come out..

sighs.. what i do wack it harder ?

i can spin the cross pin all the way around 360 and wiggle it up snd down just like 1/8 of an inch but it wont get past that point.. im not sure what is holdng it down maybe a spacer that has grooved into the pin over time..

the lock pin is a little bit but just a tiny bit worn at almost the end of it so the cross pin most of worn something

sheiza what a hassle, seems all so easy on a write up hehe and it probably is if its not damaged

well... that was a lot of fun!!

i started tapping with small hammer later on used a bigger hammer than got a BFH and a punch anything that fits really to make that swing easier then the pin finally move 1/2 an inch couple more hits and one spider gear came clear then pryed that one gear lose and took it out.. then turned the carrier the other way and hit the pin from the other end and it came out.

as you can see in the picture the pin is all chewed up, only 1 spider gear has to be replaced all others are ok, im not sure if they sell those seperately? or maybe have to buy a whole set.
i went to oreilly but they cant help me they sell wheel bearings for this axle and thats it so looking for a cross pin and spider gear set or kit all in one is probably best buy dont know where yet tho.. im probably looking at around 200$ is my wild guess

Little bit over 100 bucks. Just count splines on axle could be 27 or 29. just search Spider gear set for 8.25 and its spline count.

Wow, that thing was having a fun time in there. Maybe look on craigslist for someone parting-out? Or good excuse to put in a locker...

Mine falls out just from gravity, taking the spider gears and thrust washers with it whenever I forget to put the retaining bolt back in after pulling the c-clips.

i was going for the wheel bearings cause taking harder turns clearly was making noise and it would shift left or right depending which way i would turn. the bearings are not even worn it is or was the spider gears.

For a couple hundred more you can go ahead and throw a Spartan locker in there.

Since yours is a 94 model it probably takes this one.

spider gears came in today from otario california and everything matches up spline count 27 and spider gears all match, this is money well spend for reasonable price thanks again freegdr.

now from having a better look at the carrier there is play aswell specially the bearing on the side of the carrier gears so im going to replace these aswell.. what i do not know for sure is does the chrysler 8.25 use spacers for the carrier or is that all done by the adjusting bolt/nut ? do i need a chim kit ?

marc

edit: btw im not going to do this part by myself i will get help with setting up the backlash and preload by a family member with the right tools, my part is to get all the parts needed so we do it together and i will keep a close eye to learn a bit more. the ring pinion it self and the pinion bearing are still good and wont be replace or touched.

carrier cone bearings and cups, spider gears and wheel bearings with seals

homebrew adjusting tool (without welding) nut 6$ 3 feet pipe 11$ washer 40 cents.. complete tool for under 20$, listed on internet as 114$ without washer that prevents the tool to fall in the carrier while adjusting.
