Ranchos are always good. I run the Rancho 9000's and love them. I have had Rancho 5000 and they are good too. I think they sell for around $50 a piece.

next sep up would either be bilsteins or ranchos.

however i would seriously consider getting some OME's (they are 300 not 400)

OME is by far the best shock you can get IMO.

I've heard good things about Black Diamonds. I'm going to give 'em a try when I put my lift on.

they ride VERY nice.

as for your decision, do you drive your XJ on road or off more?

Isn't the 8.8 going to cost more than that since you're going to have to regear the front to match?

I have experienced so many different aftermarket shocks that i feel i can chime in here. With my tj, i tried the following shocks:

stock
doetech
fabtech
skyjacker
rancho
old man emu

best? Old Man Emu. Smoothest shocks out of all of them. 2nd would be stock, 3rd skyjacker

XJ
stock
old man emu

Of course, old man emu is the best of the two. I'm not gonna go through a dozen of shocks this time cuz i know i got all the shock i could ask for. You ask this question "smoothest riding shock? or best shock?" on any forum and old man emu will pop up nearly everytime. Worth every penny.

it is a DD, which is why i desire the 4.10s. Ill regear the front at some point just remove the front driveshaft for a while
