i went to a muffler shop today in order to get a quote to get both my muffler and my cat replaced.

muffler simply because it's falling apart, and the cat because when I floor it on the highway or in an incline to pass someone, i get an egg smell. doesn't happen during my daily commute, only when I floor it (past 3.5k rpm i'd say).

the guy at the shop told me those cats hardly fail, and my smell must come from some other place. he was referring to a possible leak where oil could be burned and that's what would cause the smell? or also it could be running too rich (I've had the same mpg for a couple years now, so if it's running rich, it has been for a long while)

anyway, all I want to know is if I'm better off to replace the cat or he's right and it's probably something else? he quoted me 150$ for the muffler with installation, and 190$ for the cat and installation.
