Default smelling gas

in my 97 xj after hving ran it for a few minutes i smell gas around the gas tank. i have checked the fuel lines, connections, fuel hoses, checked the tank to see if it has a hole in it and i do not see anything. i have not dropped the tank yet.

i know that if fill it all the way up some gas will leak out.....

fuel pump o-ring?

Could be the fuel pump o-ring. Where exactly is it leaking from when you fill it up all the way? Guarantee that is the reason you are smelling gas (even if it is not leaking).

You are probably leaking gas when you are in motion too (accelerating and braking will make the gas slosh around). So I would avoid driving it if at all possible until you find and fix your problem.

it leaks from the top of the tank in the middle. both my xjs have done this. as long as i keep it below 3/4 tank no leaky leak. i just smeell it. im guna drop the tank in a week or two and change the o-ring.

In the 97 and newer model the gas tank is plastic and has a screw top. You can bang it tight with a mallet and a long flathead screwdriver.

I had this problem as well, turned out to be my fuel line that gos between the fuel rail and the pump... It had a tiny pin hole in it... Cheap and relatively easy fix after dropping the gas tank.
