smell under load in 4wd?

i got a stickshift and whenever im in 4hi and under a good load like starting back up in deep soft bach sand i get a weird smell.. i dont think it the clutch and it only does this when its in 4wd. its almost like the np231 doesnt like to being under a load and not movin? any idea what this smell could be? or how to stop it?

I agree with the clutch idea, two extra tires trying to turn could cause a weak clutch to burn. I like to test my clutches like this:
Put in 1st gear hold brake and clutch
Keep foot all the way down on brake
Slowly let clutch out
Make note where the motor starts to bog like it will stall
Depending on how far you let the pedal out.....
1-25% clutch out good to go
50% clutch out will get by
75% clutch out needs replaced
100% clutch out start walking to the tranny shop
Put in 1st gear hold brake and clutch

Slowly let clutch out
Make note where the motor starts to bog like it will stall

i really really dont want to replace my clutch lol... but with that situation it happens at prolly 50%. i guess its time to save up... uggghhh
