Hey guys,
I recently bought my first Cherokee Sport, a 2000 4.0L with 120,000 miles and an automatic tranny. After about a week of driving it the engine light comes on, and brings up a code 740 which as I understand is the torque converter code. However, the truck seems to have no problems at all with the lock up/shifting, and seems to be running normal RPM's. Could this just be something small? Anyone had this same problem?
Thanks

Maybe your TC lock solenoid is getting shorted, or the windings are going bad and the resistance is getting too high for the TCU?

I have the same problem. 1999 Cherokee Sport 129K miles. Will get it figured out and report what the fix was for me. I have read that some folks have replaced the transmission fluid and transmission filter by dropping the trany pan. That may be what I do.
Report: OK on my 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport I replaced about 75% of the transmission fluid and the transmission filter. In order to get the plate off to repace the filter, I had to take our the cross transmission mount, which was easy however be careful to support your transmission or it will drop along with the drive train. It is a simple but effective design. Ok after replacing that and loading it up with ATF 4 the automatic gear box shifts much better but still getting some shake from a slow downshift when slowing down to a stop. Also the P0740 code is still appearing along with a P0700 now.
Well, I will check the wiring connections and clean them for the next attempt to fixing this issue.
