I know what you mean. Darn thing rebounded back up and caught me in the back of the head. Freaking hurt. Oddly enough, the rust bucket I just test drove had enough spring in it's struts to pop the hatch open going down the road. Pre-96 has better struts, maybe?

Have you tried adjusting the stops in? My 95 used to do the same thing, until i adjusted them.

nope, didnt even know it had em, and yeah the 84-96 hold up better. the 97-01 have a metal hatch while the 84-96 has a fiberglass one....still seen some alot of the 84-96 where you open the hatch and it falls on your head in the JY

I didn't realize it was fiberglass. Heh, should have noticed that when I realized the only rust-free part of my parts jeep was the hatch.

These should adjust, or at least they did on my 95. They had a bolt in the center that you could loosen to adjust out or tighten to adjust in. It might be the same for you 96 but im not 100% sure.

And that dog is awesome.
