I am new to the mighty Jeep XJ, have had it about a month, and so far I am loving mine I have searched the forum and didn't see an answer so here goes...

When the XJ is at operating temp (which seems to be about 190, will check that soon) and I turn on the heat, I smell a very slight coolant smell and it comes and goes. Sometimes it only happens after a few minutes, then other times I smell it right away but in either case it comes and goes. I have had some heater cores go out but they have always went out with a bang and lots of coolant in the floor or the nice spray of warm coolant on the windshield, never with a smell that comes and goes. I do have heat and the truck gets pretty warm, it just has a smell that comes and goes.

I was thinking of flushing the system and putting some fresh coolant but I fear that if it is a leak, that will make it worse.

Truck Specs: 1996 XJ Sport, 4.0 I6, 4x4

is there a leaking rad hose i had the same smell right before the upper rad hose came of due to the nipple the hose slides on exploding into hundreds of piece's

mwdouglas, I will check all the hoses in the morning for a leak. (I would rather it be that than the core)


I forgot to mention that there is no liquid at all in the floor

heater core will leak into the box have system pressure checked and the radiator cap checked also
