I just picked up the XJ a few months back.
Been wheeling it lately and noticed I've worn out something.
I notice if I quickly yank the wheel while slow or stopped, I feel a slight clunk in the steering wheel as it goes from left to right. Almost like slack or play in something?

Sounds like loose trackbar. Get under the Jeep, have somebody turn the steering wheel back and forth. Look for movement at the axel or frame mounts. Also look for excessive movement in the ball joints and tie rod ends.
