My shifting problems consist of me taking off and the tranny not changing till about 3500 to 4000 rpms. Then it only changes if I feather the throttle. If i shift it manually It will not go into 3rd. Like it doesnt exist. I think I have solenoid problems given all the reading and searching I've done on this issue. By the way it's a 1996 cherokee, 4.0 HO, Automatic, 4x4. Bone stock. I can fix it just wondering where to get them and any tips or tweaks to help out. Thanks for any tips and helpful info.

Thanks for the reply. I will be testing voltages on these parts. Just FYI.... I havent got any CEL or any codes... the light works. Was courious as to why?
A bad solenoid won't trigger a cel light because the trans computer has no way of knowing what gear the trans is really in. The 98+ trans adds an input sensor so it can tell and will detect when the trans didn't shift correctly.

That's good info for me. I did not know that. Where would yall go to get the solenoids? Is there a certain brand? And I would assume that I should replace all of the while in there..right?
I would replace all three while you're in there. The cost isn't much more than a single solenoid. The set of 3 solenoids is under $100 from amazon. I think I paid $79 for the last set I ordered. Brand doesnt seem important.
There are plenty of writeups but here's my 2 cents. Unbolt the dipstick tube from the engine block instead of cursing and trying to seperate it in the middle. Dont bother buying a new filter. Its just a metal screen that you can flush with some solvent. Gasket or silicon to reseal the pan. Careful tightening the oil pan screws as they strip the aluminum thread out fairly easily.
