Its and 88' laredo with an automatic transmission, it will never shift on its own above 2500 rpm. power mode or comfort mode doesn't matter. and as soon as it shifts to 2nd gear it shifts right to 3rd in almost 1 second. Any Ideas?

Try the TCM (transmission control module). I got mine from a junkuard for $40 and it worked fine

 

I kinda had the same problem with my '90. It would shift too soon so that the RPMs were always too low. Also, it wouldn't shift down when I needed it. I replaced the TPS (throttle position sensor at AutoZone for about $45) and it completely cured my shifting problems. I didn't know that the tranny is also connected to the TPS.

 

Kinda sounds like the toruqe converter is locking up early, can you tell if the coverter is locking? It's not supose to happen until you hit over drive, kinda feels like you shifted to another gear. When you let off the gas it unlocks, until you push on the gas again. I had 2 trucks that would lock up at 30 mph and you would let off the gas or lightly tap the brake it would unlock then lock back up. Just a thought for you.

 

Alright the trans will not down shift period while im driving it haha! when it is in third i can feel the torque converter do its thing in overdrive. So great start i'll have to check out the TPS or TCM.
