shifting at high rpms

shifting at high rpms
ok i got a 2001 cherokee 4.0 today went to start it in the morning. and it wouldnt start unless i gave it gas. once it was running it ran perfect. but then once i drove it is wouldnt shift untill very high rpms like 4 thousand. which made it very difficult to merge on the highway. anybody know what this could be? thanks in advance
