It's likely not the shifter but the indicator that slides underneath.

Pop the indicator/bezel out from the console.
There's a plastic piece pointing down on driver's side towards the front of vehicle.
It has to go into the metal bracket below it that is attached to the trans tunnel.
It can be tricky to line it all up.
Had this prob on my 2000 when I put in Novak's cable shifter.
Yours is probably the same.
