Default Shift Control Solenoid

Which one controls the first to second shift? #1? And is it located on the side of the valve body, away from the #2 solenoid? I am replacing it and want to be sure I am replacing the correct one.

1996 Cherokee 4x4 auto
Thanks

Or this, I have the replacement for #1. Once I open the pan, do they look different, or can you mount #1 where #2 goes? Or are they mounted differently enough so as not to mix them up?

It's a chart showing which solenoids are on and off for each transmission gear.
For example, for first gear solenoid 1 is turned on and solenoid 2 is turned off.
The solenoids act like valves, directing transmission fluid through the valve body to operate the transmission.

So is there anything you can change on these? I'm just interested now and looking for another Jeep project. I get really bored and when I change my trans fluid next I wanna know if I should do anything to them

There isn't any maintenance you can do other than to keep the fluid clean and replace the solenoids if they fail.

My 98 XJ has a bad shift problem when hot. It will either stay in first and rev like hell till I stomp on the gas and let off when at 4500 rpm, or it might go from 1st to 3rd and have really poor acceleration. Had this problem for a while but its now getting really, really annoying. Trans fluid change done two years ago. Fluid is still clean and does not smell burnt.
Is this a possible concern with the solenoids ? Can they be changed individually or is it an assembly ?
Cheers

They are individual items, you can change one or change them all. Before going there, have you tried adjusting the TV cable and checked the TPS for correct operation?

So we replaced the #2 solenoid and all is well. We once again have second gear! Checked resistance on the other two and they were good to go. The #2 solenoid gave no reading at all, swapped it and back in business.

Thanks again!

ok, adjusted the tv cable and checkjed the TPS. All ok. No change.
The odd thing is that this is intermittant. I can run the XJ for a week and then one day, it doesn't find 2nd gear. I have stopped the engine and restarted it to see if it will reset itself. This has worked 3 of 5 times.
Is it also a possibility that the ECM is at fault ? I replaced mine last winter for a no start concern. Got a good junkyard ECM and it started right away.
Is there an ECM update for these models ?
Thanx in advance to everyone for the great info and tips
