Well I threw a couple coats of paint over the existing paint on my Jeep because in some spots the paint was scratched and showing primer. I bought about 7 cans of Rustoleum Premium Automotive Enamel from Autozone each costing me about $4.75 a can (so it's fairly cheap). All I did was I masked off things like my fenders (even though I could have just taken them off), windows, bumpers, etc. I then proceeded to lay down a light mist of primer on the areas where the deep scratches/removed paint were. I waited for that to dry, then I took some sandpaper and scored the car up so new paint would bond easier... After that I went and just started spray bombing the areas that needed the most paint (which took about 2 cans to do). After that Just waste the rest of the cans on feathering the paint all in so it looks uniform instead of spotty.... After that's done, to get rid of the roughness and dull look of the paint, you just take some 800 grit Wet/Dry sandpaper and start wet sanding the entire car... After that is done, let the car sit overnight, then the next day, grab a couple cans of clear coat (doesn't matter what brand as long as it's the glossy kind). Start spraying clear on top of your newly sanded base coat and walla! You've got yourself a good looking paint job! I did my white XJ sport a few weeks ago and it turned out a lot better than I thought! My paint job is just temporary until I get my XJ professionally done at a paint shop, but It could be left on there for years and I would never mind it!

Oh also If you want pics of my jeep, just look under my build thread. The most recent pictures are the ones that have my paint job on them.... I also changed my grille and headlight bezels from black, to white to match the rest of the XJ. It looks really nice now!

I just finished my exterior paint, and rattle canned it myself. I used Krylon indoor/outdoor metal paint, no clear yet. Krylon gloss black was just over $2 per can at Walmart.

My truck is gonna see alot of off road use. I want to be able to fix any scratches or dings in the paint quickly and easily.

With no clear, I can hop out of the truck, grab the spare rattle can I've got, and completely fix the damage right then and there.

Will I fix it on the trail? No. But once I'm home I can take 2 min on that and have plenty of time to sort through pics of the trail ride or fix things I've broken.

Thanks! I'm pretty proud of it! I've had a little expierence painting XJs because I had to do some body work on my '92... It's like a second nature now.

check my build thread. you can get paint, hardener, and thinner for about $140 out the door, then it is sand paper, tape, and plastic costs. And if you dont have a gun or compressor and can not borrow one then you will need that too (which are about a $200 combo for a cheap set up) so anywhere from $150-$200 is what i paid to do a real paint job on the entire jeep.

and about 200 hours

Mine took around 6... lol I didn't really have to paint it a different color though. I just laid white on top of the existing "white"..... When I get my XJ professionally done by my cousin who owns a shop, I'm going with a white/silver 2 tone with some stripes. it's going to look sick.
