I have a 97 Cherokee Sport 4door witht he selectrac 4 by system. I can not seem to get her back into 2WD at all. I go from Full time to 2WD and nothing happens other than it seems to get hung up in part time, which is not all that good. I guess I should happy that it is in 4WD but I would like to be able to use 2 WD as well. Any Ideas other than the normal reverse etc... I have tried all that including rolling backwards in neutral. When I put the transfer case in neutral it works correctly but thats the only thing that works as it should. I would then put it back into 2wd and it stays in part time. I am so confused.

1. Verify you have enough fluid in the transfer case. Change the fluid if it's been a while. It is just Dex/Merc III tranny fluid. Easy job.
2. Check your air pressure on all four tires. An imbalance in tire pressure can absolutely create a problem with getting back into 2WD. I've personally seen in when I had a slow leak in one of my tires.
3. Once you get it working, exercise it in and out of 4WD FT every month or so. A good practice in general.
Let us know what you find!

Just did a fluid change about a month ago but I crawled under and checked anyway, it was good. The tires all have 50 psi on the dot. I am going to take it to the dealer and have them check the linkage and adjust as needed. I have scratched my head a few times on this one. Please keep the info coming, I will check each and every idea that comes my way. Thanks

The Jeep has been in full time all winter and I have never had it out of four wheel drive. I have tried a few times to take it out of full time but no luck. I was just trying to save a little fuel. The four low, part time and full time work as advertised but not 2wd. I ended up moving the lever back to full time because I would rather have 4wd all the time rather than not being able to get it INTO 4wd.

From this article:
http://ezinearticles.com/?Jeep-Selec...tion&id=281045
"One common operating problem with the 242 transfer case is that it will stick in 4wd even if the lever is moved to 2wd. Internally, moving the lever loads a spring which then applies force to move the selector fork. If the gears are loaded with torque, the spring will not have enough energy to move the sleeve off the gears. Once torque is removed from the gears, the spring will then move the fork and slide the sleeve of the gears.
Momentarily lifting your foot off the gas will often unload the gears enough to allow the spring pressure to move the fork. On some high mileage units, a wear groove will form on the sleeve or gear causing it to stick longer and may require a couple of changes from loaded to unloaded to get the sleeve to release form the gear."
