What the F is up with the seat belts in an XJ !! ?? I have bought 2 sets used on Flea-bay. They came in the fully retracted position and I cannot extend them out. Its like the spool is locked. I do not see any release mechanism either.

BTW: DO NOT EVER under any circumstances remove those plastic covers on the end! A 100' long torsion spring will unwind itself and u will never get it back together

 

Your inertial reel is locking up as it was designed to do.

Hold the harness as it would be positioned in the Jeep, then slowly pull the belt out.

 

I am pretty sure they have to be level, and in position like they would be mounted in the XJ to pull out the belts.

I know sometimes when I'm wheeling, and the Jeep tips a certain direction, the seat belts lock on me. (It's a pain in the *** sometimes, cause I want to move to hang a look out the window to check my clearance, and it's got me pinned to the seat)
