Default Seat Belts- During Crash

I recently purchased a 1999 4 door XJ for the 4WD capabilities over my Mazda3. It's not my daily driver so I mainly bought it to take it out on the farm and for when it snows.

I'm starting this forum topic because I believe I'm having some issues with my seat belts. They do not lock under hard braking or when you pull on the belt really hard and fast. This is a major concern because as of right now they are providing little to no use for me if I were to ever need them.

I thought If I pulled the belt all the way out that it might solve the issue but it hasn't. They are still not locking up.

Am I missing something or is this a common issue? I did a search and couldn't come up with any results so any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Run into a wall doing 25 and let us know if they work. lol Seriously, dont do that, but thats the only way to know that they work. Most vehicles will only "lock" when in an actual accident.

Yeah, I'll get right on that and let you know the results. Maybe I'm just overacting but I have never been in a car where the seat belts didn't lock up under hard braking. So i'm assuming it's a jeep thing and that I shouldn't worry??

Just checked and mine act just as you describe. They don't lock when pulling them fast.

Apparently, according to my wife, some vehicles do "lock" when you pull them quickly (I guess her Toyota did that but I dont remember it doing it). Personally, Ive never seen that happen, that I can remember. Ive never thought a seat belt that you could pull on was abnormal, and Ive been riding in cars for 34 years, driving for 18 and probably driven a hundred different cars. lol I wouldnt worry about it.

I noticed this too with my 88. My rear seat belts lock up when i yank them but my fronts don't. I was a little concerned about this until i hit a bump a little too hard on the trail and the seatbelt locked up on me I'm not worried about it anymore

Mine lock. Especially when I need to try to pick up something on the passenger side floorboard!

I knew it! That's something that I really wanted to hear because I really feel like my seatbelts are useless. Now I just need to figure out how to fix this problem.

Please feel free to chime in if anyone has found a solution to the problem.

To clear this up, the rear seats should lock up when you yank on them, the fronts seats should lock up under moderate braking. If yours seems to not be operating correctly you should get them checked out. You don't want to find out their shot when your in an accident. Better safe then sorry

I think the seat belts are covered under life time warranty.
